St Edith's Church

The spire of St Edith's Church stands out in the panorama at the top of every page of this website, as it does if you approach Bishop Wilton by road. We focus here on St Edith's, providing news and information for residents and visitors.

If you'd like to know why the church is dedicated to St Edith, you can find out at the Local History website.

Sykes Churches Trail

St Edith's Church is on the Sykes Churches Trail (Southern Route) for which a leaflet has been produced by the East Yorkshire Historic Churches Group. Eight churches are on a circular tour taking in Sledmere, Cowlam, Garton-on-the-Wolds, Kirkburn, Wetwang, Fridaythorpe, Thixendale and Fimber with outlying churches at Bishop Wilton, Wansford and North Frodingham.

To quote from the leaflet: "The Sykes churches trail leads you to some of the most fascinating churches in East Yorkshire." ... "The church of St Edith is a jewel: come and be dazzled by the sheer opulence of Victorian ornament inside this medieval church."

The trail leaflet may still be obtainable in printed form from Tourist Information Offices in the region or from the churches covered. It used to be downloadable from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's website but, alas, no longer, it would seem.

Evidently a second trail is planned for Sykes churches in North Yorkshire.

Latest Postcard

The last postcard produced shows detail from the mosaic floor in the church:

St Edith's Church - New Postcard

Only six of the birds featured on the floor are depicted. How many are there in all? Try counting them when you visit.

The postcard is on sale in the church and in the village shop.
